PERSUASIVE COMMUNICATION
Persuasive means to force someone into something. The art of persuasion is the art of finding the best available means of moving a specific audience in a specific situation to a specific decision. Persuasive communication means persuading others to understand what one is trying to communicate. It has on core purpose to get the audience to support, believe and act in favor of the presenter. Generally, it has five steps so let us discuss them all one by one.
STEPS IN PERSUASIVE COMMUNICATION
- FOCUS ON BEING HELPFUL: First of all present yourself as a genuine person who doesn’t get any profit or benefit from your decisions and actions. You have to present yourself as a mentor, teacher, veteran, or anthropologist who just wants to help others and doesn’t have personal motives.
- PROVIDE CONTEXT: Present yourself like you are an expert on that particular topic so that others find you as a person who they can trust upon. Because anyone will don’t trust you until they found you as an expert who can give them the best advice they needed.
- PLAN FOR OVERCOMING RESISTANCE: Definitely when we deal with a large audience some of them may get offended by your thought or opinions so to overcome their resistance you should have a plan. You can easily do it by making your speechless offensive, and suitable for a wide audience, replying politely to offensive or inappropriate comments, try to change facial expressions and tone with the audience while going through sensitive topics.
- ASK OPEN-ENDED QUESTIONS: When you feel the audience is on your side then ask open-ended questions so that you can guide them and deliver facts as per your interest to persuade them. This is used in almost every motivational session, marketing campaign, product launching, and many more.
- DIRECT FACTS AS PER YOUR INTENTIONS: This is the final and most crucial part where you deliver facts to the audience as per your intentions. For example, if you want to persuade a group of people on purchasing a particular mobile phone then you should not tell them like “Oh please, buy our mobile phones” in fact you should say “Do you know a new technology has come (like 5G, UPI), do your mobile have these features because now a day these things are a must. Do you know a new mobile phone is also launched with these features and it is pocket friendly too, you should have it, you really need it?”.
