JAM SESSION
Just A Minute (JAM) session is a type of test to know a candidate’s communication skills, behavior, presentation skills, confidence level, spontaneity, smartness, and knowledge. Its procedure is generally like an extempore where you will be given a topic which is random like “green” and you are required to speak about that topic for a short duration of 2-3 minutes in a sweet & formal manner.
TIPS FO JAM SESSIONS
- SIMPLE VOCABULARY: You should use simple vocabulary in speech because if you use hard or not well-known words then they will find it hard to understand you. Sometimes judges also don’t feel connected to the candidate because of the reason they can’t understand his/her words.
- PREPARATION: “Preparation is the key to success” well really I don’t know who said this line if you know about it then please tell me in the comments box. Well, whoever said it but that person is correct since as more you practice your jam session becomes more confident while presenting your thoughts and it will automatically enhance your presentation skills. Many candidates who do not prepare much get into anxious and nervous behavior while giving their presentation which enables judges to easily catch them and eliminate them from the competition. So please believe me preparation is a must.
- AVOID REPETITION: Repetition is not considered by any of the jury members because first off all jam sessions have a short duration and if candidates still repeat their points in that short duration then anyone can easily understand that they don’t have enough points or they are underconfident or both. Firstly, to avoid repetition you should go through a prior preparation where you do not down interesting points, facts, data, statistics, and opinions so that you will find it easy to say something about any topic. Secondly, you should give mock jam sessions to gain confidence. So please don’t repeat points in a jam session because of the short duration and effects we have discussed.
- AVOID MOTHER TONGUE INFLUENCE: Try not to get under your mother tongue’s influence because a jam session is a very formal activity where the test of your verbal communication is also an important part. If you get under the influence of your mother tongue then other members may think that you are biased in some opinions and they will also find it hard to understand. This may reduce your chance of getting selected and if you speak in a general & formal way then others will understand your views very easily. So always try not to have a mother tongue influence in your speech while jam sessions.
- MOCK JAM SESSIONS: These are the practice jam sessions that enhance your confidence, quality of words, way presentation, thought delivery strategy, and many more. You can easily get mock jam sessions series in any nearby grooming classes or you can find them on the internet too. I think mock jam sessions are the best way to prepare for a jam session and you should try them to have a successful jam session.
- AVOID CASUAL TALKS: Casual talks can ruin any jam session because they waste our precision time, it left a bad impression on the jury, reduce our quality content, distract the audience from the main plot, makes an awkward situation, and left the topic gets scattered. So please avoid casual talks in all of your jam sessions.
Believe me, a jam session is not a big deal if you are prepared well, follow these tips, have a good appearance, and have excellent content.
